Hobbies 爱好

Today is life-the only life you are sure of. Make the most of today. Get interested in something. Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby. Let the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you. Live today with gusto. ~ Dale Carnegie

Badminton

One of my favorite sports is badminton. This is a fast racquet sport which has been an Olympic event since 1992. Badminton is particularly popular in Asian and European countries, and is exciting to play and watch. It is deceptively easy to learn, but very difficult to master.

Some well-known exponents include Kento Momota, Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Rudy Hartono, Liem Swie King, Taufik Hidayat, Peter Gade, Morten Frost, and Zhao Jianhua.

Badminton is my main form of exercise, and I have also taken part in the Monash Staff Games.

Classical Music

I learned to play the piano as a child, and obtained a Teacher's Diploma (ATCL) while still a teenager. Though I no longer play the piano, I try to pass on what I know to my children (to the extent possible!).

Listening to classical music is a big part of my life, and I often work with classical music in the background. Some of my favourite composers are J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Grieg, Vivaldi, and Dvorak. I have an extensive collection of classical music on CDs.

Among my favourite pianists are Arthur Rubinstein, Wilhelm Kempff, Claudio Arrau, Martha Argerich, Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Yundi Li, Mitsuko Uchida, Maurizio Pollini, Daniel Barenboim, Murray Perahia, Krystian Zimmerman, Julius Katchen, Rudolf Buchbinder, Angela Hewitt, and Andras Schiff.

Other instrumentalists I like include Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Jascha Heifetz, Salvatore Accardo, Yo-yo Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich, Steven Isserlis, and Janos Starker.

Jazz Music

I was first exposed to jazz while studying in the U.S. Over the years, my listening interests have grown and currently span across bebop, cool jazz, free improvisation, bossa nova, and smooth jazz.

Great jazz musicians I get a kick out of listening to include Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Art Tatum, Art Pepper, Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Wynton Marsalis, and Wes Montgomery.
